Assisgnment for Tuesday 2/23

American Rhetoric Go to the American Rhetoric site (linked to the left) and listen at least 3 of the top 25 (of the 100) Great Speeches of all time. This link should bring you directly to the listing of the top 25 speeches - all of the have mp3 audio files which will allow you to listen to the speech. Do not select speech #24 as the entire speech is not provided. Do NOT use the MLK, I have a Dream speech as we will be using this in class later in the semester when talking abut persuasion.

If you are having difficulty finding the speech you may google the speech or look for it on youtube and watch/listen to it there.

Assignment is the ask yourself What makes this a great speech? What are the hallmarks of a great speech? How does the speech make use of the cannons?

Please have your answers TYPED - Can be bulleted or paragraph format. Bring to class on Tuesday.

Some of you are aware that my youngest daughter has a chronic health issue and spends some time in the hospital throughout the year. She is currently sick and over night her condition has gotten worse. I have to take her to the doctor and she may end up at the hospital (if past history is any indication). On top of it my oldest daughter is also home sick.

No class today. I apologize for not holding class. We will get creative and use technology to stay on track with the lesson and course material.

Informative Speech

Topics due March 4 - if you are missing class that day you MUST submit before class.

Topics must be written in a paragraph - typed- demonstrating audience analysis, relevance and pre-planning research.

Requirements- 7 minutes (30 second window)
PowerPoint - at least 4 slide with two being text slides.
4 credible sources - not heavy on Internet sources.

No more than 2 (4x6) index cards for notes (front only)

Purpose of assignment: Create a speech that presents new information to the audience.

Please go to the Speech Lab website and select any of the 5 (of 10) informative speeches. Watch the speeches.
Please discover the following about each of your chosen speeches:
(1) Was the topic novel? Did the speech provide new information?
(2) Was the speech "invented"? If so, how - what were the hallmarks of the invention?
(3) Did you clearly see the parts of the speech (introduction, body, conclusion)/
(4) what was the attention getter?
(5) What was the most memorable part of the speech?
(6) How was the speech organized? Describe the general organization pattern

Should be typed out.

Do to an illness, there will not be class today. I will be posting an assignment for you. All critiques that have not been turned in can be submitted on Tuesday. Please just hold them rather than put them under my door.

Audience Analysis - hold on to your sheets. We will still do our group exercise using the audience analysis on Tuesday. whew - it gives you a little more time to tinker with it.

update on dvds

All dvds are in the speech lab. Yesterday, I was notified that one of the dvds from the 11:00 class went missing (it did make it to the lab because some students did watch it). I received an email from the speech lab stating they found it! Yeah! All dvds are in the speech lab.

Reminder about the critiques -
single spaced- typed discussion papers.
Papers should not be "bulleted lists" of your opinions. Rather, the paper should be discussion of the 6 points "through educated eyes" via the course materials.

Please do keep it to a single page - no stapled papers. If you already turned it in (yesterday) I will accept stapled papers- but here on out - I will hold fast to this rule.

Be concise and precise!

This format will remain for the entire semester.
